Course details
Here’s a taste of what the course covers:
Unit one: Introduction to healthy eating
- This first unit explains what healthy eating is all about and why it’s important. It shows pupils the link between diet and health, and what is involved in planning a healthy diet. They will also find out about the different nutrients in food and why they are important for maintaining health, as well as learning about healthy food preparation.
Unit two: Diet and nutrition
- Different people have different nutritional needs and pupils will find out all about these needs in unit two. They will learn about the nutritional needs of a variety of age groups including healthy eating tips for toddlers, teenagers and the elderly, and also gain an understanding of the barriers to healthy eating. This unit also covers the food sources of vitamins and minerals and the importance of special dietary requirements.
Unit three: Food and nutrition issues
- This final unit looks at the effects of inadequate nutrient supply and commonly recognised eating disorders such as anorexia. You will also find out about food additives and learn how to interpret nutritional information on food labels. This unit also covers some interesting facts about nutrition and helps you to understand how to separate food facts from fiction.
How long does it take?
Healthy Eating is designed as a 90-hour course. Pupils can study flexibly at their own pace depending upon the time made available for their studies.
Course delivery and assessment
The course is offered online with vision2learn – an innovative web-based learning system, which you and your pupils can access via PC from school or home. The online course contains all of the learning content needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course, as well as activities to enable your pupils to practise their skills and test their learning receiving additional help and support from you as you are always just a click away.
About the qualification
Studying Healthy Eating leads to the accredited qualification NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Nutrition and Health, which helps your pupils to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of this subject.
In order to successfully achieve the qualification your pupils will need to complete a series of assessments as they work through each unit of the course, which they’ll send to you through the v-mail system on vision2learn. You will assess these and they will build up to form each pupil’s portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for all three units.
The computer kit you’ll need
As this is an online course, you will need access to:
- An Internet enabled PC running MS Windows and Internet Explorer 5 (or later), or Netscape 6 (or later), with JavaScript and cookies enabled
- Email software and an active e-mail account
- Microsoft Word or similar word processing package
- Download Flash player
- Download Adobe Acrobat.
