Course details
In this course, learners will work through 4 study sessions. Here’s a taste of what they will cover:
Session 1 – How to get better at solving problems
- In this first session, learners will discover how to identify a problem and describe its features.
Session 2 – Techniques for finding solutions and solving problems
- Once the learner has identified a problem, this session will help them to come up with different ways of tackling it. They will also learn how to decide which options have a realistic change of success
Session 3 – Action planning to solve problems
- In this session, learners will find out how to use a problem solving plan and check if the problem has been solved. They’ll also find out how to describe their results and explain the decisions they have made.
Session 4 – Review and improve your problem solving
- In the final session, learners will review and evaluate their problem solving skills. They will also plan any improvements that they will make in the future.
How long does it take?
Improving your Problem Solving is designed as a 30-hour course. Learners can flexibly study at their own pace, depending upon the time made available for their studies.
Course delivery and assessment
The course is offered online with vision2learn– an innovative web-based learning system, which you and your pupils can access via PC from school or home. The online course contains all of the learning content needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course, as well as activities to enable your pupils to practise their skills and test their learning receiving additional help and support from you as you are always just a click away.
About the qualification
Studying Improving your Problem Solving leads to the accredited NCFE Level 2 Key Skills Certificate in Problem Solving, which helps your pupils to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of this subject.
In order to successfully achieve a qualification your pupils will need to complete a series of assessments as they work through each session of the course. You will assess these and they will build up to form each pupil’s portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the 4 sessions of the course.

- An Internet enabled PC running Microsoft Windows operating system
- Web browser – Internet Explorer 8.0; Firefox 8.0 (or later); Google Chrome 15.0 (or later)
- Session cookies should be enabled
- JavaScript should be enabled
- Microsoft Word or similar word processing package
