How long does it take?
Key Skills in Communication (Journalism) is designed as a 30-hour course. Learners can flexibly study at their own pace, depending upon the time made available for their studies.
Course delivery and assessment
The course is offered online with vision2learn for schools – an innovative web-based learning system, which you and your pupils can access via a PC from school or home.
There are two strands to the assessment of Key Skills in Communication:
- An internally assessed portfolio of evidence
- An externally set and marked test.
The online course contains all of the learning content needed to meet the assessment requirements in order to build a portfolio of evidence. There are activities to enable your pupils to practise their skills and check their learning. They should also receive additional help and support from you as required.
Once you feel your learners are ready, you should arrange for them to complete the relevant external test, which is set by the Qualification Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) and marked by the awarding body NCFE. The questions will be based on the knowledge your learners have gained throughout the course. This end test for Communication at Level 2 consists of a multiple choice question paper for each unit. It is your schools responsibility to liaise with NCFE regarding this end test. Learners will only be awarded their Level 2 Certificate in Communication Skills if they have successfully completed both strands of the assessment.
About the qualification
Studying Key Skills in Communication (Journalism) leads to the accredited Level 2 Key Skills Certificate in Communication, which helps your pupils to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of this subject.
In order to successfully build their portfolio of evidence, your pupils will need to complete a series of assessments as they work through each session of the course. They will send these assessments to you through their My Study area on vision2learn for schools. You will assess these and they will build up to form each pupil’s portfolio of evidence of learning. The learning sessions and assessments will help to provide the underpinning knowledge your learners need to prepare them to take their external test.
