Application forms

This is a form specially created by a company, which specifies the precise information the company wants from each person applying for a particular job. It is important that you provide all the information requested on an application form.

Online applications

This is an application form that is completed online. This method of application is quicker and more cost effective than completing a paper-based application form.

CVs

A curriculum vitae or CV is a short document that lists your personal details, skills and experience. Employers will often use your CV to help them decide whether to ask you for an interview. This means that it is important that your CV:

• Is accurate
• Describes you in a positive way
• Contains information that is relevant to the job you are applying for.

Covering letters

When you send your CV to a company, you will often be asked to send a covering letter with it.

This letter gives you an opportunity to ‘sell yourself’ to the employer. Your covering letter should specify why you are the right person for the job.

Telephone enquiries

Sometimes, the first contact you have with a potential employer will be on the telephone. You may be calling to tell them you are interested in a particular job or trying to find out about any future job opportunities. If a job is available, the employer is likely to ask you to complete an application form or to send in a CV with a covering letter.

Applying in person

As well as making contact by telephone to ask about job opportunities, you might also visit a potential employer to apply for a job. If a job is available, the potential employer is likely to ask you to complete an application form or to send in a CV with a covering letter.
